Twiggy: The girl who changed fashion is enjoying a quiet life these days

When she appeared on the scene in the mid-60s, no one expected her to become a fashion icon. Lesley Hornby, known as Twiggy, was able to revolutionize the world's perception of female beauty within a few years - and is still considered one of the most influential models of all time.

An iconic look that surprised the world

Twiggy attracted attention with her exceptional appearance – eyes, expressive eyelashes, short hair and ultra-thin figure. She was the complete opposite of the curves that were common in the fashion industry at the time. Her nickname, inspired by the expression for "twig", perfectly described her fragile figure.

She was discovered by the fashion editor of the Daily Express when she noticed her photos displayed in a London hair salon. She suddenly became a fashion sensation from an inconspicuous teenager - at the age of only 16.

Behind the spotlight was family peace

Twiggy may have penetrated the world of fashion at lightning speed, but she has kept a healthy distance. She had great support in her father, who accompanied her to all important meetings and protected her from the pitfalls of show business. She never participated in wild parties, never touched drugs and her name was never written about in connection with scandals.

A career she chose for herself

Although she could shine on the catwalks for years to come, she left modeling after four intense years. She wanted to devote herself to what she had enjoyed before - acting, music and designing. In 1971, she starred in the film The Boy Friend and won two Golden Globes for it. Later she also had her own TV show and published an autobiography.

She rejected stereotypes - and she did it

Despite many doubters and journalists who often criticized her for her unusual appearance, Twiggy remained herself. She was criticized for promoting unhealthy thinness, there was speculation about eating disorders - but she repeatedly emphasized that she was naturally petite and healthy. She came from a working-class background where food was simple and healthy, and she remembers her past with gratitude.

Today Twiggy is a grandmother with charm

In her older age, Lesley became a calm, contented woman. She has a daughter, Carly, and lives in seclusion with her partner, actor Leigh Lawson - but still makes public appearances. In 2019, she was awarded the Order of the British Empire for her contribution to fashion, culture and charity.

"I love a normal life. Shopping, cooking, family. I don't want to be a star every second of the day," she said recently in one of the interviews.
