Roman Šebrle's daughter has been fighting diabetes since childhood. Nevertheless, he plays sports and aims to work for the police

Roman Šebrle, a former Olympic champion in the decathlon and today a news anchor, has reason to be proud not only of his sporting past, but above all of his children. While son Štěpán plays professional football, his younger daughter Kateřina is finding her own path despite health complications – and it is definitely not an easy one.

Diabetes from an early age

Kateřina was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at the age of five. The autoimmune disease, in which the body stops producing insulin, affects everyday life - and there is no permanent cure yet. She therefore has to inject insulin regularly, either with a pen or an insulin pump.

She still remembers the first symptoms to this day – severe fatigue and unusual thirst while cycling were the first signal that something was wrong with her body. The diagnosis meant a big change not only for her, but also for the whole family.

Family as a team

Roman Šebrle openly admitted in interviews that he had a hard time coping with his daughter's diagnosis at first. Concerns about her future were natural, but thanks to the information and support of experts, she discovered that it is possible to live a full life with diabetes. The family pulled together and supported Kateřina in everything that helped her cope with the new demands. Thanks to this, today she appears as a confident and determined young woman.

Sport still remains

Although Kateřina did not follow the path of top sports like her or her brother, sport remains a part of her life. She was involved in athletics and soccer, and as part of her studies at the Security Law Academy, she continues to participate in physical activities. "We have judo, karate, and practice since the third grade. I'm looking forward to it," she said in an interview with the Blesk newspaper.

Thanks to the school, which she enjoys and motivates, she is heading towards a possible career in the field of security forces. Although her health condition restricts her in some ways, it certainly does not prevent her from having ambitions and goals.

A role model for others

Kateřina is an example that even with a chronic illness it is possible to live actively, do sports and plan the future according to your own ideas. The open approach of the whole family - including the famous father - can be for other parents and children who are dealing with a similar diagnosis.
